Real Raccoon Problems in Chattahoochee County, GA

Raccoons are a pretty common thing in Georgia, I don’t think we go more than a couple of days without having a customer call with a raccoon problem.  They are genuinely all over the place, but sometimes those problems are a little bit more severe than others.  A couple of years back, we removed around 32 raccoons from one house.  If that surprises you, than this will blow your mind.  The homeowners were still living inside of the house.

It was an older couple, and they truly were just afraid and didn’t know what to do.  At first the raccoons were just outside, but after they discovered the pet doors that led inside of the house, they were into everything.  The poor couple was terrified and hoped that if they just left them alone then they would eventually go away on their own, but that wasn’t the case.  Eventually the problem had escalated to such an extreme point that they had no other option but to call for serious help, and luckily our technicians at Jarrod’s Wildlife and Pest Control were ready and willing to tackle the problem.

We started with the inspection so that we could see the main problem areas.  Obviously outside of the house was a big spot, and several of the raccoons had begun nesting underneath the deck; inside, both the family room and kitchen were also busy with raccoon activity.  The couches were soiled and torn, the kitchen was a mess with cupboards off their hinges and dirt and feces everywhere, and hair seemed to be covering everything.  It was heartbreaking to know that this couple was living here completely out of fear, hiding in their upstairs rooms and eating out almost always.  Seeing the real damage of the situation was shocking, it was more than we could have imagined, so we got to work immediately.

We started out with the traps, setting them up in areas with the most activity.  Outside of two holes under the deck, on the inside and outside of the pet doors, in the kitchen, and in the family room.  After we finished setting and baiting, we just had to wait, and not for long.  We came back every day, be it morning or night, and without variance there was always something in the traps.  Some days every single one had caught a raccoon.  Within 21 days, a record time for such a large problem, we had every single raccoon caught and relocated FAR from that house.

The situations we resolve and main trapping and removal services we provide are: raccoon families in attics and chimneys, woodpeckers drilling siding. mud swallow nests on stucco, rats or squirrels thumping and bumping around inside walls and in attics, voles and gophers destroying lawns, skunks stealing pet food, bat infestations, and snakes living in crawlspaces and stone walls.

Along with physical damage and disease, wild animals also bring along disturbance and nuisance with all their commotion and smell. Raccoons and rats will fight all night and keep people awake; baby raccoons chirp and chitter like little birds; skunk smell takes the cake, but have you ever smelled a dead animal in your ventilation system? What can you expect? Wildlife Stories from Real Technicians

Working in wildlife is all about being prepared for anything, literally anything.  Many times customers, though they think they know best, have no idea what they’re talking about.  They can over exaggerate or under exaggerate, and sometimes they just only had half a clue about what was happening.  But, that’s why we do what we do; to solve the problems that people didn’t realize they had no matter how big or small.  Needless to say, oftentimes we go into jobs blind, not knowing what we’ll find.

One day I received a call from a woman saying that she had a rat problem.  She had seen one run into a crack into the wall, no big deal just a run of the mill problem; but she also mentioned hearing sounds in the attic.  From my experience I knew that where there was one rat, there were inevitably more and if they were in the attic it was going to take more than a little rat catcher and some bait to solve the problem.  I felt like I had a fairly solid idea of the problem, so I headed over to do an inspection of the attic.

The problem was this attic wasn’t built for anything, all it was was exposed rafters and insulation; one wrong shuffle across the beams and I could fall down into the rooms below me. But, as a wildlife technician I was used to this scenario so I moved carefully searching for signs of a rat nest.  What I was expecting to find was piles of feces, stored food, and maybe even rat carcasses.  What I wasn’t expecting, was to come face to face with a mother raccoon and her three babies.  She was hissing and spitting and doing what any defensive mother would do, and I was trying to get myself as far back from her as I could without plummeting through the ceiling.

As I set my hand on the rafter behind me, I was again caught off guard as a rat snake sprung out of hiding and wrapped itself around my forearm.  In the next few moments everything seemed to move in slow motion.  I slid backwards towards the ladder out of the attic while simultaneously shaking the snake from my arm and watching the mother raccoon from the corner of my eye. When I finally got myself back onto solid ground, I sat myself down and had a good laugh.  Later of course I explained the multiple wildlife problems going on in the house to the owner, and we were able to solve all of them (just for the record), but while she was surprised she didn’t come close to how I felt.  It just goes to show that in wildlife, you never know what you’re going to see.
